Question:

Does my Homeowners insurance cover ANY and EVERY damage to my house?

For example, If my house is flooded and has water damage, am I covered?

If it rains and rains and the river or creek or just a big puddle floods your house…. Are you covered? 

Water damage and flood damage seem like such an obvious thing to be covered under your homeowner’s insurance policy, right??


Answer: 

No, your homeowner’s policy likely does NOT cover flood and water damage!   

Wait, what?!? 

This might be surprising to some of us. 

Most homeowner’s insurance policies have just the basic coverages for fire, lightning, hail, wind, and theft. 

Flood and water damage is almost always an additional endorsement. 

You need to add it if you want it! 

Another thing I almost always add to my client’s home policies… water/sewer back up coverage! If your toilet or drains or sinks back up and flood your floors, you want to be covered! 

This is another reminder that just chasing after the lowest insurance rates, isn’t really in your best interest. It’s a short term gain for a long term loss.  


Bottom Line… Ask your insurance broker if you’re covered for flood and water damage… and then add it to your policy!
