What Does The Affordable Care Act Actually Do For Me? | How to Insurance | 053
Hi, I’m Peter!
Welcome to HOW TO INSURANCE
Helping YOU understand insurance,
building CONFIDENCE for your future!
This Election Season has been crazy!
You’ve probably heard lots of talk about the Affordable Care Act (or Obamacare).
Some people love it. Some hate it. Some want to “repeal and replace it”. Some just don’t know what it actually is...but only what their political party thinks about it.
As a professional, that deals with the Affordable Care Act every day… let me break it down and give you my very practical view of what it actually does (void of any political commentary)
Today we are talking about:
What Does The Affordable Care Act Actually Do For Me?
As many of you know, I work with my dad, Dale Johnsen, as an insurance broker team. It’s an awesome experience working with my dad and learning from his years of wisdom.
My dad will tell me stories about how health insurance worked before the Affordable Care Act. This was only 10 years ago. It’s hard to believe that so much has changed in just one decade.
Before the Affordable Care Act was passed and enacted... if you needed to get health insurance on your own, because you were self-employed or didn’t have coverage through an employer… it was a tough road!
Getting health insurance was dependent on your actual health! To make it really simple...if you weren’t healthy or had a bad pre-existing condition there was a good chance that your health application would be denied. Or if you did qualify, it would cost a lot of money!
Since you don’t have an employer help you pay for healthcare, you were on your own. It was pretty tough!
Healthcare, for many, was unavailable or cost-prohibitive...so many people just risked it and stayed uninsured. (Quick note to the wise… never, never go without health insurance. Nowadays there is no reason or excuse for it)
After the Affordable Care Act was passed and enacted... if you needed to get health insurance on your own… it was now a “guarantee issue” and more affordable financially.
You qualify.
You qualify for health insurance automatically.
Everyone qualifies now!
Here is how and answer to the question
What Does The Affordable Care Act Actually Do For Me?
1. Everyone Qualifies for Health Insurance Now
If you’re uninsured… uh oh!
There is no reason to be anymore. You qualify!
If you or a family member is sick, has cancer or some other pre-existing condition that makes your healthcare costs very expensive…
If you fear that health insurance won’t want you because you’ll cost them too much money… never fear again!
You qualify.
You qualify for health insurance automatically.
Everyone qualifies now!
You don’t have to tell me, as your insurance broker, what health conditions you have or don’t have… it doesn’t matter when it comes to enrollment.
The cost of your healthcare now is determined only by your zip code, age, and income.
So, now is the time!
You can START a new health insurance plan during Open Enrollment, November 1 - December 15.
Contact me for help and I’ll make it simple, save you time and complete your health application!
In Washington State, we’ll use wahealthplanfinder.org
In Oregon, we’ll apply through Healthsherpa (which coordinates with healthcare.gov and makes it easy) https://www.healthsherpa.com/?_agent_id=peter-johnsen
In California, we’ll apply through CoveredCA.com and I’ll complete the application for you in one day.
2. Financial Help is available
Healthcare is more expensive than ever!
I know someone who broke their elbow and needed surgery. The medical bill was over $32,000. Thankfully they had health insurance to fully pay for it!
If you need cancer treatments, it can cost hundreds of thousands!
So because of the high cost of healthcare, the premium (what you pay) is also very expensive.
There are two ways to get financial help to pay for your healthcare:
Your employer/job helps pay
or
The government helps pay
Now, due to the Affordable Care Act, the government helps pay for your health plan.
(now obviously our government officials need to figure out where/how that money is paid for...which is the political concern…)
However, most people making lower or middle income or who just have a large family will qualify for Tax Subsidies (tax credits) that help pay for your plan each month
As you work with your insurance broker, they can better explain what you qualify for in your unique situation.
Bottom line:
What the Affordable Care Act actually does for you is:
Qualifies you for individual healthcare
Helps you financially pay for it with tax credits.
Now in many ways, this is a vastly simplified version of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) so you can read the official statements here if you’re interested.
