Are you Healthy Enough to Qualify for Health Insurance? | How to Insurance | 035
Hi, I’m Peter!

Today, we are talking about...
Are you Healthy Enough to Qualify for Health Insurance?
I was on the phone with a client and she said:
“I don’t think I’m healthy enough to qualify for health insurance”?
I totally understand the concern… but quickly gave the good news!
Yes, you qualify for health insurance!
Everyone qualifies for health insurance!
Thanks to the Affordable Care Act (or Obama Care), now everyone in the United States qualifies for health insurance, regardless of their current health condition.
Now, politics aside… this is what the law is now and what you can benefit from now!
In the “old days” before 2010… if you were sick or had a major health condition:
Your health insurance would be extremely expensive! Usually cost prohibitive!
You might not qualify. Insurance carriers might not allow you to sign on with a particular plan.
Today, in 2020, things are different and everyone has “guaranteed issue”.
Read more below:
The Affordable Care Act generally requires health insurance issuers to offer all of their individual market and group market plans to any applicant in the state. It also requires health insurance issuers to accept any employer and individual who applies for those policies, subject to certain exceptions. This provision is called “guaranteed issue” or "guaranteed availability."
Individual market coverage offered through and outside the Marketplace may restrict guaranteed issue coverage to certain specified Open Enrollment and special enrollment periods.
Additionally, the Affordable Care Act generally requires health insurance issuers to renew or continue in force coverage at the option of the policyholder. This is called “guaranteed renewability.”
To ensure continuity of coverage for consumers if an issuer is undergoing a corporate reorganization, a product transferred from one issuer to a different issuer within an issuer’s controlled group may be considered to be the same product for purposes of guaranteed renewability if certain criteria are met.
What Do We Mean by Guaranteed Renewal?
Guaranteed renewal is a requirement that an insurance company must offer to renew a policy as long as the policyholder continues to pay premiums unless an exception applies. However, guaranteed renewal does not guarantee that the premiums paid for coverage will not go up if you renew coverage.
Example
Wilbur purchases health insurance through the Marketplace in Year 1. His monthly premium is $300. Wilbur receives a notice when it is time to renew coverage for Year 2 that his monthly premium will increase to $330. If Wilbur pays his monthly premium on time, his coverage will continue uninterrupted.
Guaranteed issue means that health insurance issuers that offer individual policies in a state generally must offer all available individual coverage products to all eligible individuals in the state, and must accept any eligible individual who applies for those products.
The Affordable Care Act contains a number of provisions aimed at ensuring that most individuals have access to health insurance coverage. Health insurance issuers generally may not deny coverage or charge higher premiums based on health status or gender and may not impose coverage limitations or exclusions based on pre-existing conditions. When a plan offers dependent coverage of children, the plan must cover dependent children up to age 26.
So…
Are you Healthy Enough to Qualify for Health Insurance?
Yes, you qualify!
You are “guaranteed issue”
Your health insurance premium rate is only dependent on your age and area and the plan type.
