Question:
Are you sure you have Dental & Vision Insurance?
My teeth and my eyes are a part of my health right? I mean, it totally makes sense that they are covered under my health insurance policy.
Plus, I just started a new health plan in 2020 and I’m ‘sure’ I’m covered for dental and vision!
Right??
Think again!!!
Answer:
Dental & Vision Insurance is (almost) always an additional insurance policy!
This is a little surprising.
I agree that it would make sense for your health insurance to cover your teeth and mouth… but they rarely do. A health insurance will generally cover an annual wellness check for your eyes and teeth IF YOU’RE UNDER 19, but not if you’re OVER 19. You should check and confirm!
Usually, dental and vision services comes as an additional insurance policy. If you have insurance with your employer, often times they will add that, but it is an additional policy.
If you signed up for health insurance with the state exchange… you’re likely NOT covered for dental and vision!
Health insurance covers medical emergencies, surgeries, hospitals, doctors and to some extent, prescription drugs.
Dental insurance covers routine teeth cleaning, exams, x-rays and fillings and you get this through a small monthly premium and separate dental insurance!

Vision insurance covers regular eye exams, contact lenses, and glasses and you need to sign up for vision insurance!
