Today, we are talking about...

3 Steps If You’re Frustrated with Your Health Care Plan

MY STORY

My wife and I were all excited about our new healthcare plan! It had a low premium and came from my employer. We thought we were going to be happy with it!

And then we noticed that it didn’t include vision care and it had really limited dental options. At one point we wanted to see the acupuncturist, but we found out that wasn’t covered! The chiropractor we wanted to see didn’t take our insurance.

We felt frustrated and stuck!

It was now past Open Enrollment and we couldn’t change our plan! Aarrgh!

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Maybe you’ve felt like that before…and so you want to be proactive to take charge of your health plan this year!

Here are a few things you should know:

Open Enrollment

Open Enrollment is November 1 - December 15 (and some states extend that time). You can only shop for a new plan at that time, so don’t miss it! (Start the process now, in October, so you’re all done before Thanksgiving.)

Discount and Subsidy

Based on your income, if you are self-employed, you may very likely be eligible for a subsidized health care plan. Every state is a little different, but most people can receive a significant subsidy toward lowering their monthly premiums! It’s worth asking a broker (like myself) to run an application for you just to make sure.

Employer’s Healthcare Plan

Most of the time it’s a good idea to use your employer’s health plan, as they pay for some of it, which gives you lower premiums. However, you might find that with your income and eligibility for a subsidy … you could be better off with an independent plan!

Tip: Sometimes it’s less expensive to have your kids be on a separate plan by using the state subsidy you’re eligible for. It’s worth checking out.

If you’re self-employed, healthy, and earn so much you don’t get any subsidy, please talk to me, as I have a new, really great option that can save you a lot of money and still get you great health care!
