What is Comprehensive and Collision Auto Insurance

Scenarios

A few years ago, my family and I went on vacation and I thought my car would be safe, because it was locked inside my garage. 

Think again! 

When we came home, I discovered that a huge storage shelf in my garage had fallen on top of my car, denting up the entire body of the car hood. 

So what coverage would this fall under? 

Comprehensive or Collision? 

Let me briefly explain the difference. 

Comprehensive or Collision

In the auto insurance world, you’ll always see these two terms: Comprehensive and Collision. 

Comprehensive Insurance is what covers damage to your vehicle, generally, when you’re not driving. This includes theft and body damage. (this is what my would cover my situation with the shelf falling in my garage)

Collision Insurance is what we normally think about this. This covers your financial liability for any damage created while your car is in motion, if there is a traffic accident or if someone rear ends you! 

So if you park your car outside and someone smashes the window to steal something… this would fall under comprehensive coverage. 

If you accidentally back into your neighbor’s car on the street, that would be covered under your collision coverage.

In Summary:

What is Comprehensive and Collision Auto Insurance?

1. Comprehensive - generally covers things when you’re not driving

2. Collision - generally covers things when you are driving.
